Last New Year's Eve, Doug and Derek made a resolution to take all that they had learned together – from Boston to Rhode Island to Los Angeles – and come up with their first original single. This New Year's Eve, they were spinning that single for a crowd of hundreds. Their song "Activate My Body" recently peaked at #3 on the Billboard Club charts, and is an energetic ode to the same dance music that first inspired Doug and Derry to start spinning. Featuring vocals by Jania, the hot track is the perfect intro to their debut album and sets the stage for future success in 2008. "Maybe this year it will be two new singles, and two new compilations," jokes Derek. That might be tough, but they're prepared for the challenge of producing new material while doing their usual remix work for a growing list of artists who have taken note of their talent. "For me it [a resolution] is to stay positive and push out negativity immediately," says Doug. "We have tons of ideas of what we want to do." Indeed, The Perry Twins' visionary capabilities show no sign of letting up. Take the story behind their "She's another one [we always listened to]," says Doug. "She had a song ‘What's it Gonna Be' with Jellybean [1990]. We had that cassette single and we used to listen to it all the time. It's really funny, because it was a Sunday night and we were talking about singers we want to work with. The next name that popped into our heads was Niki Harris." "The next morning we had an email from her manager, wondering about a collaboration" he laughs. "It was meant to be!" But then, what else would you expect from two guys who always saw their future on the dance floor? THE PERRY TWINS ON… … their single "Activate My Body": Derek: "We were coming up with the lyrics and trying to incorporate the word ‘Activate' [the album title]. Originally, it was going to be ‘Activate My Love,' but we decided to change it to ‘Activate My Body,' to make it about dancing and music. Jania was the first singer we ever danced backup for when we moved out to California, and we've worked with her on and off. We've been friends for four years now, and she's such a great performer. Quinn Coleman, who co-wrote the song, has a lot of great experience. He used to be a pop singer in Japan, and he brought this ultra pop sensibility to it. We wanted the song to be energetic, upbeat and in your face. We DJ Escape & Dom Capella remix it… Dena Cucci who was one of our first inspirations as a DJ back in Rhode Island… Cory Conley from the group Pleasure Center… a remixer from Mexico, Oscar Velazquez… some guys from Italy… so it's all over. We tried to incorporate all the different remix and dance music styles that we like." … The definition of a DIVO:
Doug: "On this website, I think it's a celebration of people. Celebrating people who are really into dance music and getting their music out there to share with the world. Making people dance. It's a positive thing, associated with this website. So of course, we'd love to consider ourselves part of that! … on breaking the rules to shoot the video for "Activate My Body": Doug: "It was crazy! Jania was just awesome. All of her close-ups? I think she did that in two takes. It was such a fun experience, but it was totally rushed and a little stressful. We had to get all the dancers together in one day and teach them the choreography. We had rented a loft in downtown LA for part of the shoot, but by the time we got everything set up it was basically time to go. So we had to rush through that. Then we had to rush to downtown Burbank to shoot on top of a parking garage. We didn't have a permit, and the police station was a block away! [laughs] They could totally see us, but we got to film that. And the last part was shot in an elevator. We didn't have permission to use the elevator, so the security guard came over to ask us what we were shooting. We were trying so hard not to crack up, because we were supposed to be serious!" … one of their craziest "twin" moments: Doug: "There was this movie that we were working on, and it was going to be two weeks of good money. But Derek was going to be out of town and miss the costume fitting. So I scheduled our costume fittings for two separate days. On one day I went as myself – I didn't shave and wore my glasses. And the next day I shaved, didn't wear my glasses, tried to look different, and presented myself as him [Derek]. I was so nervous the whole time that they were going to catch on, but they never did. [laughs] Derek: "The other thing is that it was this futuristic, space age costume. The two costumes are identical, and the material is so skintight that you couldn't wear normal underwear. You had to wear this thong, basically. So I had to wear my brother's thong after he tried it on for the fitting [laughs]. That was a little scary!" … the tag team effort of working together musically. Derek: "One of us might start working on the beat, the percussion. The other starts working on the vocal dub stuff. Then we switch. Usually one of us will start working on one section, the other on another, and we'll kind of bring it together and see what needs to be changed." Doug: "All the songs kind of vary. They're their own little creations with different percentages of input from each of us. It's never the same, really." |
